Artist’s Statement
Art isn’t created just for the artist. Art is for everyone.
As a painter and public artist, my goals are to tell my story in ways that help others learn and/or feel connected through shared experiences as well as to represent the communities in which my art will reside. I believe that my art can be a service to my community and I deeply enjoy building community as much as I love painting.
The subject matter of my work will always be changing as I explore varied interests, but I am a mother, a resident of the Central Valley of California, a feminist, and an art historian, so these things will always show up in the work that reflects who I am. The body of work showing in 2026 is a reflection of my journey into feminist study and examining my own life’s experience through that new lens. I found relief and freedom in embracing the true me and I hope that these paintings communicate those emotions symbolically. The Dresser Drawer series is specifically examining the hidden space that most women have and question if there is a reflection in these drawers of the ways we live with and respond to our capitalist economy. I realized one day that I was feeling shame over caving in and buying lace lingerie when I never wore it. I thought it would make me feel a certain way, but it just made me feel uncomfortable. I don’t believe my underwear drawer should trigger shame so I decided to investigate that!
As I learn more about feminism I have come to understand that there is no one universal female experience, but I enjoy find the things that unite us while celebrating the things that make us unique. My hope is that all women would live free from oppression and feel confident in their choices, without limitations placed on them by themselves or others.
